Functional Medicine

The Medicine of Why

Through her degree Sarah trained from the Functional Medicine approach to nutrition which is based on the understanding that all the ‘systems’ of the body are inter-related. This includes the digestive, hormonal, detoxification, energy, genetics and immune systems, each one impacting the other. When it comes to health and disease, understanding these complex connections in the body is the key to positive results.

Sarah will explain to you during the consultation where there maybe underlying imbalances between each ‘system’ in your body, which could be contributing to your health today.

The Functional Medicine approach aims to identify, through a detailed first consultation, events in your life that might have contributed to a state of ill health or just feeling below par. This includes assessing pre-conception, childhood illnesses, long-term diet patterns, genetics, environmental exposures, sleep issues, medications, emotional and physical stressors. Sarah will explain to you during your consultation where there maybe underlying imbalances between each ‘system’ in your body and how this could be impacting how you feel today.

Functional Medicine

The core values of functional medicine are to get to the root cause of your symptoms albeit physical or mental. it is not about managing or masking symptoms.  For instance you may be struggling with eczema or an auto immune condition, both of which can be related to your gut health. A stool test will highlight imbalances in the digestion or microbiome that is contributing to the auto immune condition or skin disorder.  Similarly on-going debilitating eczema can have a genetic histamine component to it. By testing your genes in relation to “histamine breakdown” we can highlight this issue and help you address this through lifestyle, diet and specific supplementation.

To further enhance her knowledge, Sarah has attended Functional Medicine courses in the USA www.ifm.org.

Functional Medicine aims to deliver a personalised approch to healthcare – NOT a one size fits all approach
